MY STORY

I am Lucy and a mum of two amazing little children that keep me and my husband on our toes!  I am passionate about education and ensuring all individuals have access to the learning they need, at the time they need it.  Learning should be of the highest quality and I have aimed for this my whole career.

I am qualified in education and training, I am an early year’s practitioner and have vast amount of experience in leadership and management, During my career I have worked with many training organisations reviewing the learning they deliver, analysing the support they provide for all individuals and ensuring it’s not a one size fits all approach. I have trained organisations in personalised learning and intervention strategies, developed quality processes, sourced and obtained programme funding and created and managed learning programmes. This led me to working with and championing individuals with additional needs.

Although I had all of this experience of learning and supporting organisations to develop their teaching practices it wasn’t until I became a mum that I really gained an appreciation for how different brains can work and how much I have taken for granted in the way I learn, and I develop my skills. My son has the most beautiful and inquisitive brain, but it works very differently to mine. For the first years of his life, I struggled with being able to provide him with the tools he needed to learn and communicate in his way. That set me off on a learning journey of my own and opened me up to a world and a community of the most amazing and caring people I have ever met, the SEND community.

In the early days, I remember spending a small fortune enrolling my son into every therapy available. My son was really unhappy, and I soon realised I was trying to mould him to fit into a world that wasn’t made for him. I decided that his happiness was what was most important to me and I studied different interventions in my own time such as intensive interaction, Hanen, Makaton, PECs and positive behaviour support. This enabled me to build strategies into my son's everyday life, making it easier for him to understand the world and learn new skills. This became my full-time job.

Seeing and feeling things the way, my son does has given me a real appreciation for the importance of understanding neurodiversity, how our brains work and the impact that autism and other neurodevelopmental and sensory conditions can have on an individual. Over the years I have learnt it's not only important to teach him skills but also to educate others and develop their understanding of neurodiversity. In the last 3 years I have worked with preschool’s and nursery settings supporting 1:1’s and SENCOs develop their understanding and approaches for autistic children. I have worked with families supporting them through the diagnosis process, with education health care plans, review meetings and accessing additional support and funding.

I am passionate about my mission to raise awareness and understanding. Changing the world one person at a time, making it a better place for my son and individuals like him. As I believe that each of us can make a difference and together, we can make a change.
